Selectivos de la recaptación de serotonina (Isrs), al igual que otros antidepresivos, en ocasiones pueden provocar o activar manía o hipomanía. La incidencia varió entre 0,1% a 2% en premarketing las pruebas de varios de los Isrs. Los pacientes con trastorno bipolar son generalmente más propensos a experimentar la manía de los antidepresivos. La terapia con Isrs debe ser administrado con precaución en pacientes con antecedentes de manía o trastorno bipolar. Antes de iniciar el tratamiento, se recomienda adecuadamente pantalla de pacientes para el trastorno bipolar, incluyendo antecedentes familiares de suicidio, trastorno bipolar y depresión.
