Las sulfonamidas puede ser absorbida sistémicamente cuando se aplica a la piel, los ojos o las membranas mucosas. El uso de sulfonamidas se asocia con un gran aumento en el riesgo de síndrome de Stevens-Johnson, necrólisis epidérmica tóxica y otras graves reacciones dermatológicas, aunque estos fenómenos son poco comunes como un todo. La Hepatitis, neumonitis, y nefritis intersticial se han producido también en asociación con sulfonamida de hipersensibilidad. La terapia con tópicos sulfonamidas debe ser administrado con cautela en pacientes con alergias severas, asma bronquial o el SIDA, ya que estos pacientes pueden estar en mayor riesgo potencialmente graves reacciones de hipersensibilidad. Los pacientes deben ser instruidos para informar oportunamente los signos y síntomas que pueden preceder a la aparición de manifestaciones cutáneas del síndrome de Stevens-Johnson, tales como fiebre alta, dolor de cabeza severo, estomatitis, conjuntivitis, rinitis, uretritis, y la balanitis. Sulfonamida de la terapia debe ser detenido de inmediato si desarrolla una erupción.
