Debido a su negativa inotrópica y cronotrópica efectos sobre el corazón, los receptores beta-adrenérgicos agentes de bloqueo (también conocido como beta-bloqueantes) reducir el gasto cardíaco y pueden precipitar o agravar los síntomas de insuficiencia arterial en pacientes con enfermedad vascular periférica. Además, los no selectivos beta-bloqueadores (por ejemplo, timolol, carteolol) puede atenuar la acción de las catecolaminas de la vasodilatación mediada durante el ejercicio por el bloqueo beta-2 receptores en los vasos periféricos. Desde la aplicación tópica de beta-bloqueantes son absorbidos sistémicamente y se puede producir clínicamente significativos efectos sistémicos, incluso en niveles bajos o indetectables en plasma de los niveles, la terapia con ophthalmic bloqueadores beta debe ser administrado con cautela en pacientes con enfermedad vascular periférica.
