Los corticosteroides pueden causar perforación gastrointestinal y hemorragia, generalmente cuando se administra en dosis altas o durante períodos prolongados. También pueden enmascarar los síntomas de complicaciones como la peritonitis o sepsis intraabdominal. La terapia con corticosteroides debe ser evitado o administrado con precaución en pacientes con diverticulitis, colitis ulcerosa inespecífica (si es que hay una probabilidad de inminente perforación, absceso u otra infección piógena), o la reciente anastomosis intestinal.
