El uso de nitrofurantoína raramente se ha asociado con hepatotoxicidad, incluyendo la hepatitis, ictericia colestásica, hepatitis crónica activa, y necrosis hepática. Nitrofurantoin macrocrystals cápsulas está contraindicado en pacientes con antecedentes de ictericia colestásica/disfunción hepática asociada con nitrofurantoína. La mayoría de las reacciones agudas son autolimitados y se resuelven espontáneamente, a pesar de las muertes han sido reportadas. La terapia con el medicamento debe ser administrado con cautela en pacientes con enfermedad hepática. El control periódico de la función hepática se recomienda durante el tratamiento prolongado. La droga debe ser retirada de inmediato si la hepatitis o el daño en el hígado se produce y se sentía estar relacionados con las drogas. Desde la nitrofurantoína es parcialmente metabolizado por el hígado, una reducción de la dosis también puede ser necesaria para prevenir la toxicidad.
