Las benzodiacepinas tienen el potencial de causar dependencia y abuso. La tolerancia así como la dependencia física y psicológica puede desarrollar, especialmente después de un uso prolongado y/o dosis excesivas. Sin embargo, la interrupción brusca tras el uso continuo de 6 semanas a niveles terapéuticos en ocasiones ha precipitado los síntomas de abstinencia. Propensos a la adicción a los individuos, tales como aquellos con una historia de abuso de alcohol o drogas, debe estar bajo el cuidado de vigilancia cuando fueron tratados con benzodiazepinas. Puede ser prudente abstenerse de dispensar grandes cantidades de medicamentos para estos pacientes. Después de un uso prolongado o si la dependencia se sospecha, la retirada del tratamiento con benzodiazepinas debe realizarse gradualmente el uso de una dosis de horario que afila. Si los síntomas de abstinencia se producen, temporal restauración de benzodiazepinas puede ser necesario.
