La amantadina puede precipitar o exacerbar los síntomas psicóticos. Rara vez, los intentos de suicidio y la ideación suicida también han sido reportados, algunos de los cuales ocurrieron en pacientes sin historia previa de enfermedad psiquiátrica que estaban tomando cursos de corta duración de la amantadina para la influenza. Tratamiento con amantadine debe ser administrado con cautela en pacientes con antecedentes de trastornos psiquiátricos, inestabilidad emocional, o de abuso de sustancias, y sobre todo si son de edad avanzada. Puede ser prudente abstenerse de dispensar grandes cantidades de amantadine a estos pacientes para prevenir la sobredosis intencional, que es potencialmente fatal.
